IMSU VC BIO: Professor Uchefula Ugonna Chukwumaeze, SAN

PROFESSOR UCHEFULA UGONNA CHUKWUMAEZE, SAN


Professor Uchefula Ugonna Chukwumaeze, Ichie Osinachukwu of Amucha- Ebeise, from Umuokpoko, Amucha-Ebesie, Njaba LGA of Imo State is a Ph.D holder in Law. Having made a 2nd class Upper Division in both Abia State University, Uturu, Abia State; and Nigerian Law School, Lagos, he was invited by Abia State University in 1995 to start a career as a lecturer. He rose through the ranks to become an Associate Professor in 2009 and a Full Professor of Public Law in 2012. He is a knight of St Christopher in the Anglican Communion.


Prof Chukwumaeze has received more than 30 certificates of Honour from various bodies and communities in appreciation of his services to humanity. He is a well-respected legal practitioner of a very high distinction. He was one of the 24 (twenty-four) legal practitioners engaged in 2017 to overhaul the entire laws relating to the legal profession and draft a new law for the future of the legal profession- Legal Profession Regulation Review Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association. In 2019, he was conferred with the prestigious title of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria- the first and only academic senior advocate from Imo State. He was a member of the Committee that drafted the Administration of Criminal Justice Bill, Imo State, 2020, and a member of the Review Committee on Allocation of Lands in Imo State 2007 till 2019. He is currently the Editor in Chief of the Nigerian Bar Association Journal.


He was Head of Department, Jurisprudence, Public and International Law, Abia State University, Uturu; Head of Department, Public Law; Imo State University, Owerri; Dean, Faculty of Law, Imo State University, Owerri; Dean School of Post Graduate Studies, Imo State University; Adjunct Lecturer, Imo State University, Owerri, 1998; Adjunct Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Law, Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State, 2004; Adjunct Reader, Faculty of Law, Imo State University, Owerri, 2011; Reader, 2012 and professor in 2012. On 1* of March 2022, he was appointed the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Imo State University, Owerri by His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma.


He has also served as a senior lecturer (Sabbatical), at the Ebonyi State University Abakaliki as; an Adjunct Professor of Law, Abia State University, Uturu. He has been an External Examiner to many universities both within and outside Nigeria including; Rivers State University, PortHarcourt; Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki; Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka; Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, Anambra State; Enugu State University of Science & Technology (ESUT) Enugu and the University of The Gambia, Banjul.


He has also been an External Accessor to many intuitions both within and outside Nigeria: Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri, 2008 — 2013; Faculty of Law, University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State; Abia State University, Uturu, Rivers State University, Port Harcourt; David Clark University, Kiagbodo, Delta State; Baze University, Abuja and University of Rwanda, Kigali. He was a consultant for the United Nations and facilitated the introduction of Human Rights as a ‘Common Core’ for all undergraduate programs of Laikipia University, Kenya. He has been a member of the Senate of Imo State University since 2012 and has served in and chaired numerous committees. He is married to Barrister (Lady) Ojiugo C Chukwumaeze and the marriage is blessed with four children.
